Ten Differences Between Toronto and the Rest of Canada

Living in Canada's largest city may feel like a privilege: your city is better known than most provinces, people from almost every country has a relative there and it's always growing.

But Toronto and the rest of Canada can be very different. Here are ten demographic differences between Toronto and...everyone else in Canada.

1.) Gender: In both Toronto and the rest of Canada there are more women than men. But in Toronto that difference is wider: In Toronto about 52% of residents are female whereas in Canada generally it is 50.4% female.

2.) Religion: About 75% of Torontarians identify as being Catholic, Protestant or Agnostic. It stands out as having a very large Muslim minority at 8.2% compared to Canada's at 3.2%. Toronto is less Catholic and Protestant than the rest of Canada in general with 13.4% identifying as having a faith other than Catholic, Protestant or Islam whereas it is 5.6% Canada wide.

3.) Language: 24.8% of residents of Canada don't speak English or French, while that percentage is high it's even higher in Toronto where 30.9% did not speak any of Canada's official languages.

4.) The Elderly: In 2011 there were slightly more elderly residents than in Canada generally.
14.4% of the residents of Toronto were sixty-five or older whereas in Canada the percentage is only 12.8%.
